Twelfth Night
Summary
Twelfth Night begins with shipwreck, loss, and disguise. Viola believes her brother Sebastian drowned, enters Illyria as Cesario, and serves Duke Orsino, who sends her to woo Olivia. Olivia, mourning her brother, falls in love with Cesario; Viola, concealed as a young man, falls in love with Orsino; Sebastian's survival later turns misrecognition into comic resolution. Shakespeare sets this main plot beside a household rebellion against Malvolio, Olivia's steward, whose self-love and hostility to festivity make him vulnerable to Maria's forged letter. The comedy is full of music, appetite, wit, and desire, but grief is present from the first scene. Orsino performs melancholy through music and languor, Olivia ritualizes mourning, Viola turns bereavement into disciplined service, and Malvolio is punished through a false declaration of madness. The medical and psychological material is therefore unusually rich. Love-sickness, melancholy, feigned disorder, confinement, and the authority to name someone mad all shape the action. Malvolio's dark-room scene is comic within the plot, yet it also exposes the cruelty possible when a community controls another person's reality. Viola's disguise raises questions about gender, voice, and embodied identity without turning identity into a modern abstraction. The play's resolution depends on recognition: Sebastian confirms Viola's story, Olivia's marriage is redirected, Orsino accepts Viola, and social order returns. Yet the ending is not seamless. Malvolio exits with revenge in mind, Antonio remains awkwardly placed, and Feste's final song returns to rain, time, and human folly. Twelfth Night's festive world therefore holds sorrow and comedy together. Its romance plot celebrates desire finding its object, while its subplot warns that laughter can become exclusion and that the line between performance and suffering is not always easy to draw. Its ending is festive, but the music leaves room for exclusion, time, and unresolved hurt. Feste's songs preserve that undertone after the marriages are arranged.
